Proposed residential development
Forth Noise & Vibration was commissioned to undertake a Noise Impact Assessment for a proposed residential development in Fauldhouse, West Lothian. The assessment considered noise from the adjacent railway line and evaluated the suitability of the site for residential use with reference to relevant national and local planning guidance.
The challenge
The development site is located close to an operational railway, requiring consideration of both the overall railway noise climate and individual train pass-by events.
The assessment therefore needed to establish representative daytime and night-time noise exposure and determine how railway noise should be addressed through the layout and acoustic design of the proposed dwellings.
Our approach
Forth Noise & Vibration undertook attended environmental noise monitoring at a position representative of the most exposed proposed residential façade, using Class 1 acoustic instrumentation.
Measurements were completed across daytime and night-time periods, with detailed time-history data used to identify individual railway movements and distinguish rail noise from the wider environmental sound climate.
Measured data were analysed to establish representative daytime and night-time railway noise levels and assessed with reference to BS 8233, West Lothian Council planning guidance and relevant guidance concerning maximum night-time noise events.
The assessment also considered external-to-internal noise transmission and the implications for dwelling layout, façade specification and ventilation strategy.
The outcome
The assessment provided the project team with a clear understanding of the railway noise environment and demonstrated how acoustic considerations could be incorporated into the residential design.
Where appropriate, practical design measures were identified, including consideration of building orientation, façade performance and alternative ventilation, providing a proportionate route for achieving suitable internal and external acoustic conditions.
